Our Roots & Principles
Mish Mish is a secular, community-driven organization creating meaningful ways for Jews and their loved ones to connect through Jewish culture, arts, learning, and one another.

Founded in Los Angeles in the days following October 7, 2023, Mish Mish grew out of an urgent need for Jewish community and belonging. What began as a grassroots network has developed into a vibrant community serving people who often do not find a natural home within traditional Jewish institutions, including secular and culturally engaged Jews, interfaith couples and families, LGBTQ+ Jews, newcomers to Jewish communal life, and people seeking connection outside of synagogue-centered spaces.

Our programming approaches Jewish community as something people can actively participate in and shape. Mish Mish offers Hebrew and Yiddish language education, Jewish arts and cultural programming, holiday gatherings, book and media discussions, social events, outdoor and sports activities, educational conversations, and opportunities for civic and community engagement. We also collaborate with Jewish organizations, artists, educators, and community leaders to connect participants with a broader cultural and communal ecosystem.

Mish Mish is intentionally welcoming to non-Jewish partners, friends, and allies and is not organized around age, marital status, denomination, or level of religious observance. Our goal is to lower barriers to Jewish participation while creating substantive opportunities for learning, creativity, relationships, identity-building, and communal involvement.
Â
As Mish Mish grows, we are building the infrastructure needed to turn a successful grassroots community into a sustainable cultural organization. Fiscal sponsorship will allow us to expand accessible programming, develop partnerships, compensate artists, educators, and program leaders, pursue grants and charitable support, and create a stable foundation for long-term growth.

At its core, Mish Mish exists to help people find a place in Jewish cultural life and to create new forms of community for those who have not found that place elsewhere.
